For some young people, a mainstream school environment does not provide the conditions they need to feel settled, connected and ready to learn.

Gateway Community High is an independent Special Assistance School in Carlingford, Sydney, offering an alternative approach to secondary education for students in Years 9–12.

With small classes, personalised learning and a strong focus on student wellbeing, Gateway creates a supportive school environment where young people can reconnect with education, build confidence and work towards their academic and personal goals.

Gateway’s approach is built around three principles: Achieve. Belong. Grow. These values shape both academic learning and the way students experience school each day.

Gateway combines a flexible approach to learning with recognised educational pathways. Students in Years 9 and 10 work towards their NSW Record of School Achievement (RoSA), while Years 11 and 12 can pursue their Higher School Certificate (HSC) through a compressed curriculum model.

Small class sizes, individual learning plans and supportive relationships with teachers help students work towards their goals in an environment that recognises their individual strengths and needs.

Our Wellbeing Framework is designed around creating a Positive, Personal and Inclusive environment.

It includes trauma-informed practices, Ready to Learn Plans, Circle groups, Individual Learning Plans, Attendance Improvement Plans, and Wellbeing Wednesdays.

Together, these supports recognise that students may need different pathways to rebuild confidence, relationships and engagement with education.

What does the evidence tell us about Gateway’s approach?

Gateway Community High has worked with independent social impact measurement organisation Huber Social to measure student wellbeing and outcomes over five years.

The 2025 Social Impact Report identified a positive 5% change in overall student wellbeing, alongside improvements in areas including connection, autonomy and access to future education pathways.

The report also highlights positive changes in students' hope for the future, emotional intelligence and enjoyment of life.

These findings help Gateway understand what is working, where students need further support and how its educational approach can continue to improve.

For some students, progress begins before academic results change. It might mean coming to school more regularly, asking for help, making a friend, rebuilding confidence or beginning to see a future in education again.

At Gateway Community High, those steps matter.

That is what Achieve. Belong. Grow. means in practice.
